Since 1994 the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)
- provides standards for environmentally sustainable constructions,
- runs the national voluntary rating system and
- awards Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificates to the "green buildings" after evaluation.

The rating system addresses six major areas:
*Sustainable sites
*Water efficiency
*Energy and atmosphere
*Materials and resources
*Indoor environmental quality
*Innovation and design process
